ClientSaint Xavier University SituationIn the past five years, this rapidly-growing university on Chicago’s southwest side has invested more than $40 million in new buildings. But university leaders see the need to protect this investment by keeping the surrounding neighborhood economically healthy. Faced with stagnant property values and aging housing in its neighborhood, the university hopes to work with other major community institutions to create an effective community redevelopment campaign. SolutionMcElroy Associates worked with the university’s business school to devise economic development recommendations. We conducted focus groups and interviews with business leaders and public officials. Demographic research provided a clearer picture of local conditions. ResultA consensus is forming around the idea of working together to assure the community’s continued vitality. Increased communication between major stakeholders is an important first step in community development planning. Local government and business leaders have received a report outlining policy options. |
